Here’s Where Stimulus Talks Stand In Washington Right Now

Negotiations over the next round of stimulus aid are slow going in Washington, but lines of communications are beginning to open. Here’s where things stand.

A Monday meeting between Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was “modestly productive,” Politico reported

The Wall Street Journal described Democrats as “cautiously upbeat” in the aftermath of that meeting, which touched on several of their priorities including aid to schools, food assistance through the SNAP program and protections for renters and homeowners.

Deep divisions still remain over state and local aid, unemployment benefits and the overall price tag of the bill.

That group will meet again this afternoon to talk about that price tag, per Politico; the White House representatives will also meet with Senate Republicans later in the day.

Reports emerged Monday that the Trump Administration is considering using executive powers—meaning he would not need approval from Congress—to address the most pressing issues like supplemental federal unemployment benefits and an eviction moratorium for certain renters.

What we don’t know

The Senate is scheduled to leave for August recess at the end of the week, and it is not likely that lawmakers will come to a resolution before then. It’s unclear if lawmakers will delay the recess in order to finalize a bill.
